False Citizenship Claims Fuel Anti-Immigration Rally

AAP FactCheck has debunked social media claims that nearly a million migrants who arrived in Australia between 2022/23 and 2023/24 will soon be invited to become citizens.

The claims are based on data that mostly includes existing citizens and temporary migrants, who are not yet eligible for citizenship. Permanent visas, a precursor to citizenship, are granted at a much lower rate.

The claims have spread across social media platforms, promoting an upcoming anti-immigration march on October 19.

An earlier anti-immigration protest in August was also promoted using false claims about immigration, previously debunked by AAP FactCheck.

AAP FactCheck found that the latest posts warn of an impending boom in new citizens, but this is not supported by the data.
