The Wausau Ethics Board found that Mayor Doug Diny violated city policy by removing a ballot drop box from outside City Hall ahead of last November's election.
According to the board, Diny "exceeded his lawful authority" by taking the drop box, despite being advised by the city attorney that the city clerk has discretion over ballot drop boxes.
Diny must adjust his conduct so that he follows the city's ethics policy going forward.
The ethics board chose not to impose fines on Diny and did not recommend that the City Council take steps to censure, suspend, or remove him from office.
The board's findings conclude that Diny's actions were a violation of city policy, but he will not face any further action.
