A rare Bank of England £5 note has sold for more than £20,000 at auction.
The note, from the Bank of England’s Birmingham branch, was produced in May 1892 and was sold at Noonans Mayfair.
“The note is being sold by a long-term collector of high-end Bank of England notes, and we believe it is the rarest Birmingham £5 in existence.”
Ahead of the auction, it was anticipated that the note would match or exceed its estimate, and it eventually sold for £24,000.
According to Andrew Pattison, head of the banknote department at Noonans, this is a once in a lifetime chance for collectors.
The note was part of a 1,300 lot strong auction of British and Irish Banknotes.
