Marine Corps Live-Fire Event to Close Coastal Freeway

A large stretch of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton will be closed due to a Marine Corps live-fire event, part of its 250th birthday celebration.

Initially, the Marines stated that no closures would be necessary, but California has announced a four-hour closure citing "extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers, including sudden unexpected and loud explosions."

The closure will be in effect from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre, between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Due to an event at Camp Pendleton today, October 18th, Interstate 5 will be closed from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

This closure comes only three days after the Marine Corps assured that no freeway closure would be necessary.
