Toronto will experience early sunsets and cold weather this week, with strong wind gusts and freezing temperatures expected over the weekend. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) on Wednesday.
Winds from the southwest are currently reaching speeds of 30 to 50 km/h. However, a cold front moving through the GTA between 2 and 3 p.m. will shift winds to come from the northwest, potentially causing gusts up to 80 km/h.
“People [who] are walking in areas where there could be tree branches that could be weakened, and things of that nature, just to be more alert and aware of their surroundings,” Environment Canada advised.
With gusts this strong, there's a risk that loose objects could be blown around, potentially injuring people. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items to avoid accidents.
Strong winds may also cause power outages by damaging power lines or trees. Toronto Hydro is monitoring the situation closely and preparing to respond to any outages. Customers are encouraged to be prepared and can visit the Outage Hub for support.
Environment Canada warns that windy conditions could cause flying debris and power disruptions.
Author's summary: Toronto is set for strong winds up to 80 km/h and freezing temperatures, urging residents to secure belongings and prepare for potential power outages during this winter-like weather shift.
