“TODAY” co-anchor Craig Melvin recently revisited his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, to film a special segment reflecting on his first year at the anchor desk and his roots.
During his trip, Melvin walked down the stairs of his preschool into the very classroom where he learned to read. The flood of memories brought him to tears, and he described this moment as the highlight of his visit.
“Columbia is just such a warm hug for me every time I go back,” Melvin shared.
Melvin’s homecoming happened nearly a year after he succeeded Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of the “TODAY” show. He reflected on the adjustments required to balance the intensified responsibilities.
He described his dynamic schedule, often traveling to three cities in a week, attending fundraisers, hosting town halls, engaging at luncheons, promoting “TODAY,” and connecting with fans—all while maintaining his work as a reporter.
“You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show,” he explained.
Melvin’s journey illustrates how deeply connected he remains to his hometown even as he embraces a demanding national role.
