A two-phase safety improvement project is set to begin on Monday on Garden of the Gods Road, west of Interstate 25, aiming to reduce crashes caused by drivers turning left across all six lanes of traffic.
The project will focus on modifying the center median on Garden of the Gods Road between I-25 and Chestnut Street, a stretch with a high concentration of restaurants and businesses, as well as dedicated left-turn lanes.
There will be some inside lane closures, said Todd Frisbie, the city's head traffic engineer. Most of the time, it'll be a single lane in each direction.
The goal is to reduce crashes that occur when drivers exit access roads and make left turns between heavy, speeding vehicles across the eastbound and westbound lanes.
Author's summary: Safety project starts Monday.
