A coalition of 26 environmental, health, legal, and community organizations across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has called on Toronto City Council to oppose the province's new energy plan. They warn it threatens the city’s climate targets and risks locking residents into decades of reliance on fossil fuels.
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) released its final Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) for Toronto on October 31. This plan represents a significant challenge to Toronto’s effort to reach net-zero emissions.
Toronto City Council has committed to phasing out the Portlands Energy Centre by 2035 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 through the TransformTO initiative. However, the IESO’s proposal contradicts these commitments.
“The IESO’s proposal takes the city in the opposite direction,” said representatives of the coalition.
These organizations emphasize the urgency to prioritize clean energy solutions and maintain alignment with Toronto’s ambitious climate agenda.
