Andrew McMullen, a 42-year-old resident of 27 Ffordd Alban in Tywyn, appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on 30 October due to unpaid child support amounting to £4,474.78.
McMullen faced a committal complaint for refusing to pay the child support owed. The magistrates concluded his non-payment was a “wilful refusal” and decided that “no other method of enforcement is appropriate.”
The court noted McMullen showed “culpable neglect” and “chose to bury his head in the sand.”
The case highlights the court’s firm stance on addressing persistent child support arrears.
The court gave McMullen a chance to avoid jail by committing to monthly payments of overdue child support totaling over £4,000 within two years.
