UC Berkeley officials have not disclosed specific security measures but confirm they are ready to host the conservative organization Turning Point USA on November 10, nearly two months after its founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University.
Turning Point USA, a nonprofit promoting conservative values on high school and college campuses, was co-founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk and his late mentor, Bill Montgomery. The Berkeley event marks Turning Point USA’s first college campus appearance in California since Kirk’s death.
Kirk's killing has heightened concerns regarding political violence and sparked renewed discussions about how universities balance security and free speech issues.
John Paul Leon, a junior and president of Berkeley’s Turning Point USA chapter founded in 2019, had been preparing for Kirk’s planned visit for months before the assassination.
“(We’ve) been wanting Charlie for a long time,” Leon said. “I’ve been planning this since… June… It’s been a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.”
Leon’s statement highlights the chapter’s dedication despite the tragic circumstances surrounding Kirk’s death.
Author's summary: UC Berkeley is preparing to host Turning Point USA’s first California campus event since Charlie Kirk’s assassination, balancing security concerns with a commitment to free speech.
