Senior Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has voiced doubts about Sussan Ley’s leadership as tensions rise within the Coalition over the net-zero policy. Henderson expressed concern that she cannot endorse the current direction of the party ahead of an upcoming internal meeting on the issue.
The Liberal Party faces mounting pressure to clarify its stance on achieving net zero emissions, particularly after the Nationals publicly backed away from the policy. A formal partyroom meeting is scheduled for next week, with the final Coalition decision expected on Sunday, November 16.
In an interview with Sky News Australia host Peter Stefanovic, Senator Henderson, who has opposed the net-zero policy, acknowledged growing unease over Ms. Ley’s performance and support within the party.
“I cannot support the way things are,” she said. “I can’t pretend things are good. We’ve had a dire Newspoll result, a primary vote of just 24 per cent. Things are not traveling well.”
“I do think Sussan is losing support, but I believe in miracles — we can still turn things around.”
The scheduled partyroom meeting will serve as a critical test of Ms. Ley’s leadership, as internal divisions deepen over climate commitments and the party’s political direction.
