Opposition skills and training spokesman Scott Buchholz urged people not to confuse Sussan Ley’s “feminine politeness” with weakness. The Queensland MP praised Ley’s efforts despite challenging circumstances but pointed out the party’s struggle with her leadership style.
“Don’t mistake her feminine politeness for weakness. We have come from a previous leadership style of authoritarian [under Dutton] to now a consultative, and some people mistake that, but there are just different styles of leadership.”
Buchholz described Ley’s predecessor, Peter Dutton’s leadership, as “authoritarian” and referenced ongoing tensions within the party.
After learning about comments made by Victorian Liberal senator Sarah Henderson on Ley’s leadership, Buchholz called them “career-limiting.” He expressed concern about party unity following the election defeat in May and emphasized the need for healing.
