Latest on David Kampf

Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to reflect on his career path. During the offseason, the Maple Leafs attempted to trade Kampf, but no deal was finalized. Consequently, he was waived during training camp, went unclaimed, and was assigned to the Marlies.

General Manager Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago, making this development unexpected. Initially, Kampf was expected to anchor the fourth line, contributing effectively in faceoffs and penalty killing.

However, under coach Craig Berube last season, his role diminished, with lower-cost players now filling roster spots he once held. This season, Kampf appeared in only four of the Marlies’ seven games and did not play on the road in Chicago.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Kampf is taking some time to consider his future.

In recent years, several players, including Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina, have left guaranteed contracts to seek better NHL opportunities or to return to the league. Kampf might be considering a similar choice, despite potentially forfeiting over $3 million owed from his salary and signing bonus this season and next.

Summary

David Kampf is evaluating his future after being waived and assigned to the AHL, potentially considering leaving guaranteed money to pursue better NHL chances.
