Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend after a turbulent start to the storm season.
Late thunderstorms and strong winds may affect Sydney on both Friday and Saturday evenings, following warm daytime temperatures. According to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathon Howe, much of southeastern Australia will experience several "unsettled days" due to an approaching cold front.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,”
Mr. Howe also warned that northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales could face damaging wind gusts Friday afternoon, with the chance of thunderstorms in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,”
He noted that damaging wind gusts may accompany thunderstorms moving into Saturday.
Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail are also possible from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and further inland into parts of Queensland.
Summary: A cold front will bring multiple days of severe storms, damaging winds, and heavy rain across southeastern Australia, impacting millions from Victoria to Queensland.
