Hungary will ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin can enter the country for a planned summit with US President Donald Trump in Budapest, according to Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
Putin faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes. Nevertheless, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in April his intention to withdraw Hungary from the ICC. This move follows Hungary's welcome of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Budapest, despite an ICC warrant against him for war crimes in Gaza.
The Hungarian government plans to argue that ICC arrest warrants do not apply within Budapest.
Donald Trump announced on Thursday his plan to meet Putin in Budapest to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Szijjarto noted that the summit date could be finalized after upcoming meetings between the US and Russian foreign ministers scheduled for next week.
Trump will discuss the potential supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting at the White House on Friday.
Author's summary: Hungary commits to allowing Putin's entry for a Budapest summit with Trump, despite ICC arrest warrants, reflecting Orbán’s controversial stance on international legal norms.
