In his new memoir We Did OK, Kid, Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, 87, expresses regret over a 2018 interview where he said he did not care about his estranged daughter Abigail’s life.
Hopkins acknowledges having spoken coldly about Abigail in the press. He explains that after 20 years without contact, he no longer knew her whereabouts, marital status, or if she had children, which led to his regrettable statement of indifference.
"It is true that I have spoken about her in the press coldly, saying in one regrettable interview that after 20 years of not hearing from her, I no longer knew where she was or if she’d ever married or had children, and that at that point I did not care."
Hopkins highlights that tabloids have published "horrific, untrue" stories about their estrangement, including false claims that he got Abigail into drugs or rejected her as a child.
The actor reflects on his emotional state at the time, attributing the harshness to his grandfather's influence:
"Though it’s no excuse, I know that was the coldness of my grandfather coming out: Move on! That hardness is my default."
Despite the difficult history, Hopkins expresses hope for renewed connection and well-being for Abigail:
"I hope she knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy."
Author’s Summary: Anthony Hopkins candidly reflects on past mistakes, expressing regret and hope for reconciliation with his estranged daughter in his revealing new memoir.
