The helicopter that helped launch STARS finds a new home in Calgary

A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter has settled into its new home at The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. The Airbus BK117 first joined the non-profit’s fleet in 1985, marking the beginning of an era for the emergency air service.

For years, the aircraft carried out missions across Western Canada before its well-deserved retirement.

“Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community,”

STARS shared this message on Facebook, celebrating its long history and community support. Over 100 donors helped raise more than $900,000 for STARS operations, and their names are now displayed on the helicopter as a tribute.

“An inspiring legacy,”

is how The Hangar Flight Museum described the aircraft in its own Facebook post, expressing pride in becoming the helicopter’s permanent home and preserving STARS’ story for future generations.
