Alberta’s official fire season ends Friday, but dry weather has led to new fire advisories in the southern parts of the province.
The county has declared a moderate fire risk for both the east and west sides of Rocky View County due to dry and windy weather, according to the county’s website.
“This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly,” said Rocky View County Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner.
The dry conditions have caused a rise in grass fires recently, with as many as three fires reported in a single day. Some fires may be caused by human negligence, such as discarded lit cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way,” warned Messner.
In addition to the advisory, a fire ban has been implemented, suspending permits for fireworks and outdoor burns. Exceptions are made for barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
Messner has not specified when the advisory will be lifted but expects it to last at least another week as dry conditions continue.
Rocky View County faces ongoing fire risks due to persistent dry and windy conditions, prompting advisories and bans to prevent further grass fires.
