Doha summit ends with call to turn social pledges into action

Doha Summit Calls for Action on Social Commitments

The Second World Summit for Social Development ended in Doha on Thursday with urgent appeals for nations to swiftly transform their pledges into concrete actions. The goal is to ensure the Doha Political Declaration fosters measurable advancement in reducing poverty, promoting decent work, and enhancing social inclusion.

Key Messages from the Summit

“Copenhagen taught us 30 years ago that social development and inclusion are essential for strong societies,” said Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly.

“We promised to leave no one behind. Social development is not a ‘nice to have’ nor an act of charity. It is in the self-interest of every country.”

Baerbock emphasized that today’s hunger and poverty stem not from scarcity but from conflict, inequality, and political failures. She highlighted, “One of the biggest problems is not money as such. It is rather how it is invested.”

Summit Participation and Discussions

The program included formal plenary and roundtable discussions, complemented by over 250 “solution sessions.” These focused on sharing practical methods to expand social protection, improve healthcare and education accessibility, and promote dignified work.
