It was a true NextGen derby, full of young talent and energy. On court, “the boys from Krakow,” Spaniards Alonso Rodriguez and David Gala, faced each other in a thrilling duel. Both were part of Spain’s gold-winning team at the 2023 European Games in Poland.
Rodriguez partnered with Argentine left-hander Ignacio Juani Rubini, while Gala teamed up with his compatriot from Madrid, Pablo Garcia. On Court 2 of the Rafa Nadal Academy, these four promising players (Gala and Rubini born in 2006, Rodriguez and Garcia in 2003) showcased impressive skill and maturity.
The match highlighted how fast these athletes are developing. Gala and Garcia had already defeated Di Nenno and Augsburger, the number 5 seeds, after a successful run on the CUPRA FIP Tour, where Garcia claimed three straight titles and Gala two. Their momentum carried them to a 6-4, 7-6 victory after a tight second-set tiebreak against Rodriguez and Rubini.
“If David Gala has been called ‘the chosen one’ and the brightest gem of Spain’s new generation, there’s a reason,”
For both Gala and Garcia, this result marks the greatest achievement of their careers so far. Before the FIP World Cup Pairs, Gala’s best finish had been a quarterfinal appearance at Tarragona P1 2025 alongside Campagnolo, where they lost 6-2, 6-2 to Yanguas-Nieto.
Gala and Garcia’s win at the Rafa Nadal Academy marks a turning point in their careers, solidifying their status as the new faces of Spanish padel’s future generation.
