Newport continues its role as caretaker of the Purple People Bridge, entering a short-term rental agreement to maintain the emergency support system while progress continues toward a permanent repair plan.
The city is finalizing an agreement with LRT Restoration Technologies, LLC for the rental and inspection of the temporary shoring system that supports the weakened masonry pier on the bridge.
“This is shoring that was put up last year by the Purple People Bridge Company,” said Newport Assistant Manager Brian Steffen. “We’ve since inherited that shoring expense while we seek out permanent repairs for the bridge.”
In 2024, LRT Restoration Technologies installed the emergency shoring tower after finding major structural damage in one of the bridge’s stone piers. The tower remains crucial for ensuring the bridge’s stability until restoration is completed.
City officials emphasized that the shoring tower not only stabilizes the bridge temporarily but will also serve as part of the lifting mechanism used during realignment and reconstruction of the damaged section.
The commission’s recent approval guarantees continued safety for pedestrians and structural integrity as Newport develops funding and design plans for a long-term restoration solution.
Newport secures the Purple People Bridge’s safety by extending use of its emergency shoring system while working toward a lasting structural repair plan.
