$1.22B Pattullo Bridge Replacement Targets Late-2025 Opening in British Columbia

The long-awaited replacement of British Columbia’s Pattullo Bridge is nearing completion after several delays, set to transform travel between Surrey and New Westminster. Provincial officials now aim for a late-2025 opening, nearly two years later than initially planned.

The new bridge will be a four-lane cable-stayed structure, replacing the original 1937 truss bridge that crosses the Fraser River, a major commuter route in the region.

The project is managed by the province’s Transportation Investment Corp., which awarded the design-build-finance contract in 2020 to Fraser Crossing Partners—a joint venture between Aecon Group Inc. and Acciona Infrastructure Canada Inc.

At financial close, the project's cost was approximately $1.05 billion. Updated provincial figures now estimate the total budget at around $1.22 billion, accounting for inflation and currency changes.

“When ENR last reported on the project in early 2020, work was set to begin that spring with completion expected by 2023,”

noted delays caused by the pandemic and disruptions in steel and cable supply chains extended the timeline by nearly two years.

This infrastructure upgrade promises to improve daily commutes by replacing an aging crossing with a modern, safer bridge.
