The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has raised concerns that many people at risk are unaware they qualify for a free flu vaccine. The agency warns that this lack of awareness could leave millions vulnerable to infection and complications.
“Less than a third (28.9%) of people with one or more long-term health conditions have received a flu vaccine.”
About nine million people under the age of 65 fall into clinical risk groups that make them eligible for vaccination. However, only 40% were vaccinated during the 2024–2025 season, meaning that over five million individuals missed the opportunity and remain unprotected.
In contrast, vaccine uptake among adults aged 65 and older is significantly higher — 61.5% so far this year and 74.9% last year. Yet, even within this age group, many with chronic health conditions are still missing their shots.
“For some clinical groups, the risk of flu-related death is significantly higher compared with the general population.”
UKHSA warns millions of younger adults with chronic illnesses risk missing flu protection, as vaccine uptake remains below 30% for those under 65 in clinical risk groups.
