Somerset Council is reminding eligible residents to get their flu vaccination if they haven’t done so yet. The best time to have a flu jab is in autumn or early winter, before flu starts to spread widely.
This year, flu cases are already being reported. Flu is more serious than a common cold; it can increase the risk of severe lung and airway infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, or worsen existing health conditions.
Protecting yourself means protecting others. With flu already circulating, now is the perfect time for those who are eligible. It’s quick, safe and helps stop the spread to those most at risk.
— Councillor Graham Oakes, Somerset Council Executive Member for Public Health, Climate Change and Environment
The flu virus spreads easily and can sometimes lead to hospitalisation or even death. It evolves constantly, which is why annual vaccination is advised.
Getting a flu vaccination now is a safe, quick way to protect yourself and others, especially while the virus is actively spreading in the community.
