The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings for all 21 counties in New Jersey due to a strong cold front expected to bring damaging winds overnight into Thursday morning.
Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are anticipated statewide, with the strongest winds occurring between midnight and daybreak Thursday following the cold front passage. Southwest winds will increase throughout Wednesday afternoon, reaching 25 to 35 mph, especially along the Jersey Shore.
“Strong winds will arrive behind a cold front late today and tonight,” the National Weather Service said. “The start of winds may be accompanied by a line of showers with gusts up to 60 mph. Damage to trees and utilities possible. Blow-out tides (very low water levels) possible tonight and Thursday on tidal waters.”
The high winds may cause power outages and disrupt travel across the state.
The approaching system will produce increasing southwest winds on Wednesday afternoon, especially along the coast, before the strongest gusts hit after midnight. The weather service warns of possible damage to trees and utilities due to the fast, powerful winds.
Summary: A strong cold front will bring damaging winds statewide overnight, risking power outages, travel disruptions, and environmental effects including very low tides.
