As the week progresses, Southcentral Alaska is experiencing a drop in temperatures accompanied by wintry weather conditions. A negatively tilted trough aloft and southeasterly winds are driving moisture into the region, bringing snow and rain/snow mixes to many areas.
Heavy snow is not expected in the next few days; however, light snow accumulations will increase throughout the week. Southcentral roads remain slick and icy due to ongoing snow and rain.
"Slick and icy roads remain with Southcentral today, as moisture embedded within a negatively tilted trough is keeping snow and rain in the forecast."
Light snow accumulations are common, with the possibility of some wintry mix later in the afternoon. Road conditions may be hazardous at times.
Southerly moisture flow continues to produce waves of precipitation across Southcentral. Coastal zones are more likely to experience rain/snow mixes, while inland areas will primarily see snow due to cooler temperatures.
Generally, precipitation amounts will be light, but some areas could accumulate up to one inch of snow by the end of the week. Variation in snowfall amounts is expected given the unorganized nature of the precipitation.
"While snow levels have dropped, the heaviest snow will remain in the Chugach Range and along the Hillside this week."
The Chugach Range and Hillside are forecast to receive the most significant snowfall during this period.
This week will bring cooler weather and lighter snow accumulations to Southcentral Alaska, creating slick road conditions, especially in the Chugach Range and surrounding areas.
Author’s note: Southcentral Alaska is entering a period of cooler, wintry weather with light snow accumulations and potential driving hazards through the week.
