Philippine officials reported that the death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi's widespread flooding and destruction in the central region has reached at least 114, with 127 people still missing. Many of those affected are in a province struggling to recover from a recent deadly earthquake.
The central province of Cebu suffered the most, with flash floods triggered by Typhoon Kalmaegi. Rivers and waterways overflowed, worsening the devastation. Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, confirmed these details.
Among the casualties were six individuals killed in a Philippine Air Force helicopter crash in Agusan del Sur province on Tuesday. The helicopter was carrying a crew assigned to deliver humanitarian aid to regions devastated by the typhoon. The military has not disclosed the cause of the crash.
By Wednesday noon, Kalmaegi had moved from western Palawan province into the South China Sea and was heading towards Vietnam, as per weather forecasters.
“Kalmaegi set off flash floods and caused a river and other waterways to swell,” reported provincial officials.
Author's summary: Typhoon Kalmaegi has caused severe flooding and over a hundred deaths in the Philippines, hitting Cebu hardest while authorities continue rescue efforts amid ongoing disaster recovery.
