Sam Smith, the English singer known for hits like Unholy, Fire on Fire, and I’m Not the Only One, shared candidly about their childhood challenges with weight and body image.
On the podcast Podcrushed, hosted by actor Penn Badgley, the 33-year-old artist, who uses they/them pronouns, revealed they underwent liposuction at just 13 years old. This decision was driven by intense bullying related to their weight and developing chest during their school years.
“My weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly, the thing I probably got teased the most about.”
Sam explained that their changing body made them extremely self-conscious and a frequent target of bullies.
They described how the physical changes affected their ability to participate in normal activities:
“I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”
When asked about their parents' reaction to the surgery, Sam affirmed their family was very supportive of the decision.
“My parents were hugely supportive of my choice to have the surgery.”
Sam Smith’s early surgery highlights how deeply childhood bullying and body image struggles affected their youth, reinforcing the importance of family support during difficult times.
