Nine-man Auckland FC endured a fierce attack from Wellington Phoenix to win the first New Zealand Derby of the Isuzu UTE A-League season. Despite two red cards, Auckland triumphed 2-1 over their rivals in a dramatic match at Sky Stadium on Saturday night.
Black Knights star Dan Hall and substitute Logan Rogerson were both sent off in the second half, forcing Auckland to play with nine men for the final 20 minutes. Despite this disadvantage, the reigning premiers successfully resisted a strong Wellington Phoenix surge.
From the outset, the contest was intense. Auckland exposed Wellington’s much-discussed high defensive line just 28 seconds in, with Cosgrove scoring a sensational opening goal that shocked the crowd.

Wellington quickly responded in the ninth minute when their in-form recruit Eze scored a remarkable equalizer from the edge of the penalty area. The Phoenix’s high line was breached again near the end of the first half when Jesse Randall lobbed the ball over Phoenix goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, but Auckland teammate Cosgrove was officially credited with the goal.
Under coach Steve Corica, Auckland maintained their unbeaten streak, achieving their fourth consecutive victory over Wellington Phoenix in this rivalry.
