Auckland FC’s mascot, Tāma the Kingfisher, has been banned from appearing at Sky Stadium by the Wellington Phoenix ahead of their match on Saturday evening. This ban prevents Tāma from participating in the mascot race held between the Phoenix men's and women's doubleheader games.
In response, Auckland FC launched a petition seeking to overturn the ban. Tāma was seen protesting outside both Parliament and Sky Stadium, emphasizing the club’s disapproval.
“To ban a kid’s mascot from a halftime mascot race is frankly some of the most egregious behaviour I have ever come across,” said an Auckland FC spokesperson. They added that Tāma is an “innocent symbol” and expressed being “appalled” by the decision.
The spokesperson also highlighted their visit to Parliament, describing it as “the home of fairness and decency,” to appeal for the decision to be reversed.
Brenton Vannisselroy, Wellington Phoenix’s head of media, explained that the reason for Tāma’s exclusion is that the mascot race features only Wellington-based mascots.
