Back in 2022, I reviewed Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change. So, it was a pleasant surprise to receive a message from singer Erin inviting me to review their newest release — the aptly titled The Day Job Gets in the Way.
From the first listen, it’s evident that Nervous Twitch still know how to turn daily frustrations into something that feels like joyful rebellion. Where their previous record carried a “less-angry riot grrrl” kind of spirit, this one comes across looser and more playful, yet still fierce and catchy.
“Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their knack for making everyday frustrations sound like joyful rebellion.”
The album draws some parallels with The Slits — quirky, rough-edged punk driven by a strong DIY ethos. Still, Nervous Twitch manage to maintain their own identity, delivering a sound that’s scrappy but tuneful, raw yet instantly engaging.
The production has an appealingly unpolished, almost analog charm to it — like a hidden gem you might find in a second-hand record store and immediately fall for. Erin’s vocals float brightly over jangly guitars and a pulsing rhythm section, lending even sharp lyrics an unexpected sense of warmth.
“Don’t be fooled by that sweetness, though.”
Nervous Twitch’s newest record fuses playful punk energy with disarming warmth, proving the band still thrives on turning everyday emotion into pure melodic rebellion.
