The majority of the Montreal Canadiens' forwards have performed well in their roles since Patrik Laine suffered a long-term sports hernia injury after the 6th game of the season. However, Joe Veleno has consistently lowered the effectiveness of any line he plays on.
It may be time to promote someone like Lucas Condotta, who has had brief NHL experience, or Jared Davidson from the Laval Rocket. As Matt Drake noted on November 8, 2025:
“Could it be time to bring up someone like Lucas Condotta (who has had a cup of coffee in the league) or Jared Davidson up from the Laval Rocket? Are we sure we can’t just sneak this guy into the lineup if we have him wear Veleno’s gear?”
The Canadiens face the need to add a forward who can outperform Veleno. When playing alongside Kirby Dach and Zack Bolduc, Veleno limited their offensive potential. His skill set never fully adapted from the QMJHL to the professional level, forcing him into a more defensive role.
Although his skills might suit a fourth-line position, he appears to lack the necessary work ethic. Typically, a fourth-line player excels with a rugged, forechecking style, rather than a finesse approach—which does not match Veleno's play.
Overall, the Canadiens need to consider upgrading the forward position to improve their lineup efficiency.
