Karrueche Tran immersed herself in Hip-Hop culture to prepare for her role in Lifetime’s upcoming movie Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, which premiered on Saturday, November 8. To portray Brooklyn rapper energy authentically, she studied artist Lola Brooke.
In the film, Tran plays Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a platinum-selling rapper with a complicated past and a sharp attitude. She admitted that the role required her to completely reinvent herself to fit the character’s world.
“I’m not musically inclined in any way,” she told Celeb Secrets. “But it was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it. I think I did a pretty decent job!”
The story follows Charlie’s journey after prison, where she’s assigned community service under Pastor Kyrus Owens, portrayed by Mark J.P. As their paths intersect, the clash between her street background and his spiritual discipline becomes the emotional focus of the narrative.
“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to,” Tran said. “I was anxious because I wanted to do the character justice — but once I focused, I realized you can do anything when you really go for it.”
The ensemble cast features Tobias Truvillion, B. Simone, Reginae Carter, and Da Brat. The film is directed by acclaimed author Terry McMillan, known for Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Author’s Summary: Karrueche Tran embraced authenticity and determination to embody her rap persona, drawing inspiration from Lola Brooke and proving her versatility beyond acting alone.
