The Great World War 2 Afterparty is Over

Our ancestors secured eighty years of peace, institutional strength, and moral clarity. My paternal grandfather served as a bombardier in Europe during World War 2. Around Christmas 2002, I asked him to share all he remembered about the war.

I had always deeply respected my grandparents’ generation and often urged them to share their stories. Yet, I had avoided asking directly about the war, especially about combat; it always lingered silently, shaping and giving meaning to everything.

My other grandfather, an infantryman in the Pacific, had passed away a few years earlier, taking with him many dark secrets—why he became physically ill seeing certain objects, or the details behind the secret wound that earned him an "extra" purple heart.

Determined not to let my remaining grandfather’s stories vanish, we spent an entire night and early morning together as he recounted everything he could recall.

A Different Perspective on War

The image of World War 2 I received was far from the glossy, heroic version often portrayed in popular culture. Instead, it revealed foolish mistakes and severe incompetence, casual brutality, and petty vices.

“Most of all what I realized was how confused everyone was.”
