Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” after the original pilot had already been filmed. Despite coming into the production late, he was given room to collaborate with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to refine his character — the long-term partner of Sennott’s character, Maia.
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”
Working closely with the creative team, Hutcherson helped evolve Dylan into a more layered and relatable character. Originally played by Miles Robbins in the pilot, Dylan’s new portrayal explored his motivations, humor, and emotional connection to Maia, shaping a more authentic relationship dynamic.
The discussions between Hutcherson, Sennott, and Barrie focused on understanding who Dylan truly was — his personality, his goals, and why he stayed with Maia. This collaborative approach allowed the character to grow beyond what was initially written in the script, giving his story depth and nuance within the HBO comedy.
