Developers concerned over electric grid capacity as new New York state law looms

Developers Concerned Over Electric Grid Capacity

A new state law in New York, set to take effect next year, is already impacting homebuilding projects.

As of January 1, New York state will require most new buildings to be built with electric heat and appliances.

"You can't just mandate something without having the ability to actually execute it, and that's what they've done,"

said John Graziose, president of Gerber Homes, a local homebuilding company.

Graziose cited the example of Fourmile Creek, a housing development project in Ontario that has been in the works for nearly three years.

"We assumed that there would be electric capacity to go forward,"

said Graziose, highlighting the concerns over electric grid capacity.

Some local homebuilders have reported delays or cancellations of projects due to these concerns.

Author's summary: New York state law requires electric heat and appliances in new buildings, causing concerns among developers.
