The federal government shutdown will not slow down the cleanup operations at the former J.H. Baxter wood treatment plant in Eugene.
The plant, which closed in 2022 after nearly 80 years of operation, had been plagued by complaints of noxious odors and elevated dioxin levels in neighboring areas.
“Baxter is funded with fiscal year 2025 funds and activities will continue,”
said Alice Corcoran, an EPA Region 10 spokesperson. She added that the site has been identified to continue operations during a shutdown, with both time-critical removal action and Superfund site work proceeding as planned.
The EPA designated the plant a Superfund site in July, ensuring years of continued removal of heavy contaminants from the area.
