The Familiarity of a General Store
A visit to the BCMA to see the Gordon Parks exhibit sparked a reflection on the significance of general stores in Maine.
The photographs on display, particularly those of a quaint general store, drew me in and made me think about the role these stores play in shaping community.
Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.
My personal experience with general stores began at Hope General Store, where I spent summer breaks as a child, walking there barefoot with friends and feeling independent.
