The Baltimore Orioles have claimed outfielder Pedro León off waivers from the Houston Astros, according to Francys Romero of BeisbolFR. Earlier this week, the Astros placed several players on waivers, including León, in an effort to clear roster space.
The Orioles must clear space on their 40-man roster to finalize the acquisition of León, who is considered a post-hype prospect.
León, once a high-profile signing from Cuba, received a $4 million signing bonus from the Astros in January 2021. He was highly ranked among Houston’s top prospects for several years but has yet to fulfill his expected potential.
At 27 years old, turning 28 in May, León has appeared in only seven Major League games. His MLB stats include a .100/.143/.100 slash line and 10 strikeouts in 21 plate appearances, reflecting a limited and underwhelming opportunity.
Between 2021 and 2023, León posted a .233/.350/.419 line in the minors, translating to a 104 wRC+, indicating slightly above-average offensive production. Strikeout rates remained high, at 29% during that span.
In 2024, he showed significant offensive improvement in Triple-A, hitting .299/.372/.514. Despite striking out 27% of the time, his performance earned a 130 wRC+ in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
“León was a high-profile signing out of Cuba several years ago. In January of 2021, the Astros gave him a $4MM signing bonus.”
“He’s now 27 years old, turning 28 in May, but hasn’t yet delivered on that hype.”
Baltimore's claim on Pedro León represents a calculated gamble on a once-promising Cuban prospect who has yet to establish himself at the Major League level despite solid minor league improvement.
