Residents living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham warn that it has become hazardous because many drivers ignore the four-way stop signs. The crossing, located close to Woodward and West 14 Mile, has locals feeling unsafe about walking or biking nearby.
“It’s an accident waiting to happen,”
said Kimberly, a longtime Birmingham resident who often witnesses unsafe driving behaviors at the intersection.
According to Kimberly, drivers often fail to come to a complete stop and sometimes speed through the area. Local 4 reporters observed drivers rolling through stop signs even during slower weekday traffic.
“I try to avoid this intersection if I can, but sometimes you just can’t,”
she said. “There are always people walking, jogging, biking, or pushing strollers, and drivers just zoom past without paying attention.”
The posted speed limit in the neighborhood is 25 mph, but residents say many exceed it.
“When I’m driving along here, most people are going much faster than that,”
said Tim, Kimberly’s husband. “I’ve been passed in the residential area while doing 25 — it’s dangerous.”
“I’m paranoid when I have to cross here,”
Kimberly added, noting that walking in their neighborhood often feels risky. The couple believes new safety measures could help protect pedestrians and children in the community.
