Carrie Bickmore, a well-known broadcaster and advocate for cancer research, has been recognized as the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria. The award was presented on November 6 in Melbourne, honoring her enduring dedication to brain cancer awareness and research support.
Since 2015, Bickmore has helped raise over $27 million, funding vital research projects and accelerating efforts to find a cure for brain cancer. In 2021, her vision led to the establishment of The Brain Cancer Centre — a collaborative institution bringing together leading Australian scientists and clinicians.
Through its work, the center has supported numerous studies and initiated groundbreaking clinical trials, advancing treatment options for patients across the country.
Brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australians under 40.
This mission is deeply personal for Bickmore, who lost her husband, Greg, to the illness in 2010 — an experience that continues to drive her commitment to the cause.
In addition to Bickmore’s recognition, elderly homelessness advocate Bryan Lipmann AM has been named the 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria, acknowledging his long-standing efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable older Australians.
Carrie Bickmore’s recognition as the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria highlights her tireless advocacy and transformative impact on brain cancer research in Australia.
