MLB Free Agency officially begins Thursday night, but the Baltimore Orioles have already been active this week. After naming Craig Albernaz as their new manager, the Orioles reversed course on their trade with the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline to get reliever Andrew Kittredge back for their bullpen.
Continuing to strengthen their relief corps, Baltimore claimed right-handed pitcher George Soriano off waivers from the Miami Marlins. The Orioles also added a bench player from the Marlins on Wednesday night.
Over recent days, Mike Rodriguez hinted at the Orioles' impending signing of veteran outfielder Leody Taveras, a move later confirmed by Jon Heyman. Taveras agreed to a one-year contract worth $2 million to join Baltimore for the upcoming season.
Since his Major League debut in 2020, Taveras spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers before finishing the 2025 season with the Seattle Mariners. His offensive numbers declined noticeably after joining Seattle, hitting just .174/.198/.272 across 98 plate appearances.
“Taveras' defense has been generally above average throughout his career, and his base-stealing ability will add valuable depth to the Orioles' bench next season.”
The Orioles have quietly reinforced their roster in preparation for the new season by adding experienced bullpen arms and signing Leody Taveras, a defensively strong outfielder known for his speed on the bases.
The Orioles strategically bolstered their bullpen and bench ahead of free agency, securing veteran pitcher and outfielder Leody Taveras to enhance defensive depth and speed for the 2026 season.
