Hull KR CEO Explains World Club Challenge Venue Switch

Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin clarified why the upcoming World Club Challenge will take place at the home ground of city rivals Hull FC. According to Lakin, the club’s main objective was to ensure the event stayed in Hull, even if that meant using the MKM Stadium instead of their own Craven Park.

“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull.”

Financial and Logistical Reasons

Lakin explained that while Elland Road was briefly considered, the smaller capacity of Craven Park made it unsuitable for hosting such a major match. The MKM Stadium offered the right balance of size, location, and convenience to handle the expected surge in attendance and meet financial requirements.

“It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible.”

He emphasized that the decision aligns with both economic sense and fan demand, adding that players also wanted to perform on a bigger stage. Hull KR intends to maintain city pride while ensuring the World Club Challenge remains accessible to as many fans as possible.

“For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.”

Venue Decision Reflects City Commitment

Lakin reiterated that keeping the event in Hull reflects the club’s commitment to local supporters and the city’s strong rugby league tradition, despite temporarily using their rivals’ stadium.

Author’s Summary: Paul Lakin confirmed Hull KR’s choice to host the World Club Challenge at Hull FC’s MKM Stadium, driven by capacity, financial logic, and dedication to keeping the event in the city.
