Victoria's highest court has ruled that Tony Mokbel is no longer classified as a "serious drug offender" and will not face additional prison time for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking scheme. Mokbel was re-sentenced to time already served after other convictions were overturned in connection with the Lawyer X scandal.
The Court of Appeal resentenced Mokbel over a drug operation, known as "Magnum," which he ran between 2006 and 2007 while hiding in Greece and evading Australian police. Originally sentenced in 2012 to 30 years in jail, Mokbel’s penalty included a 20-year term for the drug trafficking racket.
Today's ruling reduced the Magnum sentence to time served due to the impact of the Lawyer X scandal and the successful challenge of other convictions.
Tony Mokbel kissed his partner passionately at the conclusion of Thursday's hearing and declined to comment to the media.
Mokbel remains on bail and is scheduled to return to court later this month for a separate drug-related case.
After spending more than 6,500 days in custody, Tony Mokbel has scored another major legal victory, moving him closer to complete freedom.
