Jennifer Lawrence has collaborated with Wolfgang Tillmans, Elizabeth Peyton, and Philippe Parreno to create intimate portraits for W Magazine's new Art Issue. The actor, known for her candid personality, became the muse for three distinct contemporary visions.
During the interview, Lawrence admitted that drawing isn’t her strength, except for a simple horse head in profile that she sketches with childlike enthusiasm. This lighthearted anecdote set the tone for W Magazine’s ongoing Art Issue, a tradition since 2006 that pairs celebrities with cutting-edge artists.
Past editions have featured artists merging their vision with pop culture icons. Mickalene Thomas photographed Cardi B, Barbara Kruger layered her text over a daring Kim Kardashian portrait, and George Clooney stepped into Yayoi Kusama’s dotted universe.
This year’s issue continues the tradition, presenting three interpretations of Jennifer Lawrence, each captured in the unique style of Peyton, Tillmans, and Parreno. Every artist produced a separate cover, revealing different shades of the 35-year-old actor’s personality.
“We wanted to work with artists who approached portraiture in different ways and who worked in different mediums. Of course, it was also important that we connected to them on a personal level,” said Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine. “Each of them approached the collaboration differently, but with great commitment and care.”
Through their work, the three artists reinterpret stardom and authenticity, showing Lawrence as both muse and collaborator. The result is a celebration of artistic dialogue between fine art and celebrity culture.
