Sam Smith has shared a personal story about undergoing liposuction surgery as a child, with their parents' full support, in an effort to cope with insecurities caused by bullying. The singer revealed this during an interview on the podcast Podcrushed with You star Penn Badgley on November 5th.
Reflecting on their childhood in Cambridgeshire, Sam explained that teasing targeted their weight more than their queerness. They found their weight to be the hardest challenge during school years.
“For me, it was always my weight. My queerness was something that I could handle, and I could have a grasp on it. But my weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about.”
At just 13 years old, Sam decided to have liposuction to stop the bullying. They also had surgery on their chest due to physical changes. Though liposuction is a highly invasive procedure involving inserting a tube to remove fat, they felt it was necessary at the time.
“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”
The support from their parents made the decision possible despite Sam's young age. However, the surgery did not solve the insecurities in the long term.
Sam Smith reveals that early liposuction surgery, supported by their parents, was a response to bullying about their weight but ultimately didn't provide lasting relief from their insecurities.
