Edmonton Oilers' Promising Goalie Prospect in the Minors

The Edmonton Oilers may have found an internal solution to strengthen their goaltending. Samuel Jonsson, drafted by the Oilers in the fifth round in 2022, has been impressing during the 2024-25 season.

While playing for Bofors IK in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second-tier professional league, Jonsson posted a 1.88 goals-against average (GAA) and a .922 save percentage (SV%) over 24 games. His strong performance earned him a three-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers in April 2025.

Despite the Oilers also signing veteran goalies Matt Tomkins and Connor Ingram, Jonsson began the 2025-26 season in the ECHL with the Fort Wayne Komets. His early play has been outstanding.

At only 21 years old, it would be premature to expect Jonsson to play in the NHL during the 2025-26 season. However, his performance in the minors shows he could develop into an NHL-caliber goaltender.

“His strong 2024-25 season and red-hot start with the Komets indicate he has the potential to become an NHL-caliber goalie.”

Author's summary: Samuel Jonsson's exceptional minor league performance positions him as a promising goaltending prospect with the potential to impact the Edmonton Oilers' future roster.
