The episode opened with a New York City mayoral debate featuring Miles Teller as Andrew Cuomo, Ramy Youssef as Zohran Mamdani, and Shane Gillis as Curtis Sliwa. It stood out as the funniest cold open of the season and perhaps the best performance Shane Gillis has delivered on SNL. The sketch was excellent, though it also included James Austin Johnson’s impersonation of Trump, who delivered a strong line:
“I have good brain. I took a cognitive test and I did so well that they immediately gave me an MRI.”
The hopeful Mamdani victory hints at more appearances from Ramy Youssef in the future.
Score: 7 out of 10
Teller’s monologue was decent with good energy. Having recently lost his house in the Pallisades fire, he seemed somewhat more grounded than usual. Interestingly, he chose not to mention his upcoming movie Eternity releasing later this month.
Score: 5 out of 10
This sketch, a game show where hungover contestants guess their previous night’s activities, started the show. However, it was mediocre and lacked the twists the season’s writers need to incorporate, feeling too predictable.
Score: 5 out of 10
In this sketch, Miles Teller portrayed both Property Brothers helping renovate the White House. The humor hit a little too close to reality, making the sketch more depressing than funny.
Score: 6 out of 10
This sketch was surprisingly funnier than expected, offering good laughs despite low expectations.
“I hope Mamdami’s (hopeful) win means we see a little more Youssef.”
Author's Summary: Shane Gillis shines in a strong SNL cold open, while Miles Teller’s hosting brings mixed moments marked by genuine energy but uneven sketches.
