Iraqi Refugee Involved in Hanley Mosque Riots

An Iraqi refugee, Aso Hassan, who fled persecution in Iraq and settled in Stoke-on-Trent, has been imprisoned for throwing bricks during the Hanley riots.

Hassan was worshiping at a mosque on Town Road on August 3, 2024, when he noticed police cordons being set up outside. He then began wielding a broom handle and throwing rocks at police and far-right demonstrators.

Prosecutor David Bennett stated that Hassan played an "active role" in the disorder, participating from 1 pm until around 4 pm.
