Mediterranean-Style Diet and Exercise Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk

A large-scale study found that following a Mediterranean-style diet paired with moderate exercise significantly reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 31%.

The study, known as PREDIMED-Plus, is the largest nutrition trial in Europe, led by the University of Navarra, involving over 200 researchers and 4,746 participants aged 55-75 who were overweight or obese with metabolic syndrome.

Modest and sustained lifestyle changes could prevent thousands of new (type 2 diabetes) diagnoses every year.

The trial was conducted in over 100 primary care centers and found that a lighter Mediterranean-style diet combined with moderate physical activity and professional help with weight loss can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Author's summary: Mediterranean diet and exercise reduce diabetes risk by 31%.
